Your Personal Best: Straight Arm Plank

By WVUA 23 Digital Reporter Kyrsten Eller

Exercise is beneficial for a healthy lifestyle, but it can be difficult starting out. Dr. Milady Murphy has a simple toning exercise that works for everybody.

According to Murphy, the straight arm plank exercise helps strengthen and tone the entire body, with an emphasis on the core muscle group. And the only thing you need for this workout is time.

“Simply done, you get on all fours and place the palm of your hands directly below your shoulders, elbows slightly rotated in,” said Murphy. “Place your feet directly behind you, keeping your head in alignment. Your head should be straight all the way down to your heels.”

If you’re a beginner, it’s recommended that you gradually work up to holding this position for 5 seconds. For intermediate people, it should be 20 seconds and for advanced it should be 40 seconds.

Murphy said she recommends three sets with rest in between. Straight arm planks tone the upper, middle, lower and outside of the abdominal areas, which can be important for strength, alignment, posture and efficiency in movement.
