TUSCALOOSA— Shelton State Community College Health and Wellness Division Chair Dr. Milady Murphy with this week’s personal best regarding muscle loss in the body in men and women.
After the age of 25, men and women alike lose precious muscle in the body.
“The only way to counteract that negative process is strength training or body resistant exercises,” Murphy said. Murphy said that these exercises can be simply done on the floor, couch or bed.
“Extend your leg, keeping it straight, working the toes towards you,” Murphy said. She said that by holding this position for four or five seconds you are instantly contracting the muscles and strengthening them.
Murphy said that what you do on one side, be sure to do on the other.
“This form of leg resistant exercise maintains muscle on our legs, thereby enhancing mobility and improving our independence as we age,” Murphy said.
Murphy encourages all to remember these suggestions while being safe and practicing wellness.
