The Benjamin Barnes Branch of the YMCA puts its Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all, even children.

Programs for children include summer camps, sports and after-school programs for ages 4 to 14.

Benjamin Barnes YMCA Executive Director Lakeda Smith said their basketball program focuses on fundamentals, but also on having fun.

“We were without basketball for a couple of years in West Tuscaloosa, so when the Benjamin Barnes Branch YMCA re-introduced sports it was a great thing,” Smith said.

YMCA Sports Director Corey Jones said his mission is to do everything he can to keep Tuscaloosa’s young men and women on the right path, and keeping them active in sports is an easy way to achieve that.

“For me growing up I loved the sport of basketball,” Jones said. “That was fun, but getting (children) out of the streets, keeping them out of trouble, that’s the main focus.”

Basketball teams are coached by community members including parents, business owners and pastors.

The YMCA youth development programs cater to children ages 4 to 14.
