WRONG-WAY DRIVER CHARGED WITH RECKLESS MURDER
HOOVER, Ala. (AP) – Authorities have identified a teenager who they say caused a wreck that killed a woman and injured four others.
Hoover police spokesman Lt. Keith Czeskleba tells news outlets that 19-year-old Pedro Ivan Rico Mendoza is charged with reckless murder in 34-year-old Crystal Lavonne Ponder’s death.
Police say Mendoza was traveling north in the southbound lanes of Interstate 65 when he hit a vehicle carrying Ponder, her husband and her young son, which then struck another car.
Czeskleba says Mendoza left his vehicle and fled on foot.
Ponder’s husband and son were seriously injured. The driver and a passenger in the other vehicle suffered minor injuries.
It isn’t clear if Mendoza, who also faces two counts of first-degree assault and leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, has an attorney.
