WOMAN STARTS PETITION REQUESTING HARSHER PENALTIES FOR DOG FIGHTERS

It’s been a little over a week since Pickens County authorities arrested a man for dog fighting after a video surfaced of his dog killing a puppy reported lost in the Sapps community.

One local woman is helping in her own way, organizing a petition that might help end the dog fighting problem.

Sandra Brown said she hopes her petition reaches lawmakers and pushes them to pass harsher laws with tougher penalties for those who involve themselves in dog fighting or animal abuse.

While her petition has been online just a few days, it’s already garnered more than 8,000 signatures.

“We really need to do something,” Brown said. “This is insanity.”

Pickens County Sheriff David Abston said Calvin Hinton, one of the men accused of siccing an adult dog on a 5-month-old Labrador puppy, could face more charges after his case is presented to a Pickens County grand jury.

Abston doesn’t deny dog fighting is a problem in Pickens County, and said he welcomes any tougher laws that might help deter crimes like these from being committed.
