Woman Fighting Breast Cancer Raising Money for Mammograms

TUSCALOOSA COUNTY– A local woman is hoping her fight to beat breast cancer will save others women here locally, 55 to be exact.

Annette Smallwood was diagnosed with breast cancer two months before her 55th birthday.

Since it was her annual mammogram that caught her cancer, Smallwood decided she wanted to give 55 other women access to this healthcare as well.

In an effort to raise these funds, Smallwood created the initiative “55 for 55.” Her goal is to raise $7,000  to pay for the 55 mammograms.

Smallwood, who is undergoing treatment for her breast cancer, said she knew she’d have to shave her head eventually, so why not make the best of it and raise some money for her “55 for 55” initiative while doing it?

Monday, the supporter with the highest bid was handed clippers to shave Smallwood’s head.

After her diagnosis, Smallwood discovered one of her closest friends, who happens to be a male, had survived breast cancer as well.

Smallwood wants everyone to know breast cancer effects both women and men.

If you’d like to support Smallwood’s initiative, you can donate directly to the 55 for 55 account set up at Bryant Bank or find more ways to help on the Facebook page 55 for 55.
