WOMAN, 55, KILLED WHILE CROSSING HIGHWAY 82 IN NORTHPORT

UPDATE: Sources say the driver of the pickup that hit a woman crossing Highway 82 East in Northport Saturday night was an off-duty police officer heading to work at the Taylor Hardin Secure Medical Facility.

The crash was ruled an accident by investigators, but an autopsy is being performed on the victim and the case will go to a grand jury.

Investigators said the officer is not likely to be charged. The Taylor Hardin Police Department would not comment.

Northport Police confirm 55-year-old woman was struck and killed while crossing Highway 82 East in Northport around 9:30 Saturday night.

Deborah Simmons Homan was struck by a pickup truck while as she crossed the road, and was pronounced dead a short time later at DCH Regional Medical Center.

Capt. Keith Carpenter with the Northport Police Department said right now, police are treating the incident as an accident.

“Sometimes, accidents do happen if people walk out into traffic,” he said.

Crossing a busy road with no crosswalks like Highway 82 isn’t a good idea, Carpenter said, despite the lack of a jaywalking ordinance in Northport.

Police said they determined Homan was leaving One More Lounge and crossed the road at the Shell Station on the eastbound side. They said it’s not clear where she was heading.

“Officers from the accident reconstruction scene came out and are currently handling the investigation to determine the cause of the accident,” Carpenter said.

Police said no criminal charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing.
