West Alabama Wholesale hosts canned food drive
By WVUA 23 News Reporter Erin Patterson
West Alabama Wholesale is helping families in need have a better holiday meal. On Thursday, the auto dealer hosted a food drive for needy families. Their goal is to collect enough food for 100 families.
The event featured food from Aww Shucks, who will also be making a donation to make up for any differences from today.
With the number of canned goods donated Thursday, West Alabama Wholesale was able to make 76 Thanksgiving meal packs including turkey, ham, cornmeal, a box of mac and cheese, brown sugar, vegetables, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, cake mix and other goodies.
“Any single-parent household with more than two children, any person over the age of 65 or any families who make less than $15 an hour automatically qualify, said West Alabama Wholesale Manager Howard Lanier.
About 500 people filtered in and out throughout the day, stopping to drop off their goods or grab some corn from Aww Shucks.
“We’re living in tough times and a lot of people aren’t in a situation where they are able to afford groceries, so that’s one of the reasons we are here,” said Aww Shucks employee Phillip Powell. “We wanted to be here for that particular reason, to help give back to people who can’t afford it.”
