WEEKEND STORMS CAUSE DAMAGE IN SOME PARTS OF ALABAMA
HEADLAND, Ala. (AP) – Storms dropped more than 5 inches of rain in parts of Alabama and damaged a school in Headland, prompting officials to cancel Monday classes.
Henry County Superintendent Lesa Knowles said high winds passed through the area around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, peeling the roof from the Headland High School Auditorium.
Those storms also caused leaks at the elementary school in Headland and power outages around town due to a few trees being knocked over. The schools were closed Monday, and Knowles said the school board has called an emergency meeting later Monday.
The National Weather Service reports that by late Sunday night, weather stations recorded 5.5 inches of rain in Geneva County; 3.9 inches in the Headland area; and nearly 4.8 inches in Houston County.
