WATKINS FILES FOR YOUTHFUL OFFENDER STATUS IN CAPITAL MURDER CASE
The arraignment scheduled for Thursday for Luther Watkins Jr. was canceled to allow Watkins to file a petition requesting youthful offender status.
Watkins is charged with capital murder, accused of shooting and killing Tuscaloosa Police Officer Dornell Cousette on Sept. 16, 2019.
In Alabama, a defendant younger than 21 who is facing a criminal charge may seek youthful offender status. Being granted youthful offender status allows for the possibility of reduced penalties for defendants.
A new hearing date will be set to determine if Watkins is granted the status.
