WALKER COUNTY JOB FAIR HAS HUGE TURNOUT

Thursday in Walker County, over 500 people looking for work attended a job fair held at the Community Health Systems building in Jasper.

There were over 50 employers there. The job fair was open to the public, but many people there were miners who’ve lost their jobs due to the declining coal industry

The event was sponsored by the Alabama Department of Labor, the Alabama Career Center System , and Senator Greg Reed’s office along with several Walker County organizations.
According to the Department of Labor Commissioner Fitzgerald Washington, over 1000 miners lost their jobs in 2015.
As those numbers grew, Senator Reed, who represents a large number of the displaced miners decided it was time to help his constituents.
Laid off miners we spoke with today tell us, they are certainly thankful for this opportunity.
Another public job fair will be held in west Alabama February 9, 2016.
