VICTIM OF EARLY MORNING APARTMENT FIRE IDENTIFIED

Police have identified 29-year-old Jamarreo Tyrone Lykes as the sole victim in an early morning apartment fire on Oct. 3.

Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue, along with the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, responded to the fire at Copper Creek Apartments off of 12th Avenue around 2:30 a.m. When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and fire coming from a second story apartment. While fighting the flames, crews found Lykes deceased in the bedroom.

“Any time that there is more oxygen in the room, the fire can flow,” Holly Whigham with Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue said. “All the doors were open, so that helped the fire spread quickly. The fire originated in the kitchen, but that’s all the information we have at this time.”

Fire and rescue officials say the blaze spread quickly. After further investigation they’ve ruled the fire started in the kitchen.
