VFWs collecting donations for those affected by Hurricane Ian

Vfw Post 6022

Veterans of Foreign Wars posts around the state are coming together to help our neighbors in Florida after Hurricane Ian devastated a portion of the state.

The VFW posts, including Post 6022 in Cottondale, are collecting all kinds of donations for storm survivors.

Donations needed include cleaning supplies, outdoor tools like rakes and shovels, nonperishable food items and, of course, monetary donations.

Clothing items will not be accepted.

VFW District 6 Cmdr. Donnie Nelson said his post knows how crucial outside help is because it hasn’t been too long ago since our community was on the receiving end in the wake of the April 27, 2011, tornado.

“It makes a huge difference,” Nelson said. “A lot of times we get knocked down, we need help getting back up. It helps when areas that are not affected step up and help the communities that are affected. That is part of the military way of life. We have always served and we continue to serve. Even though a lot of us are retired, that is part of our mission at the VFW is to serve our veterans and our community.”

You can drop off donations at any VFW post throughout the state through Sunday.
