University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine’s Dr. Sarah Nafziger gave an update via Zoom this week, saying COVID-19 numbers are slightly decreasing in adults. However, they are still facing difficulties.

With the new cases in adults dropping the past two weeks, UAB continues to see a climb with cases in children.

One of the biggest concerns is how this will play a role in hospitalization rates for adults in the near future.

“We’re hopeful certainly that people who are vaccinated and people who continue to be careful and wear a mask, with those things in place, that we won’t impact hospitalizations tremendously for adults, but that remains to be seen,” said Nafziger. “So that’s the thing we’re really keeping an eye on closely and hoping that those cases in pediatric doesn’t translate into another surge.”

UAB urges people to continue to take safety measures such as wearing a mask, washing your hands and to get vaccinated.
