UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA STUDENTS SPRUCE UP VANCE ELEMENTARY

Community service is what strengthens an area’s well-being, and University of Alabama students have their sights set on Vance.

Those involved with Alabama Action, UA’s community service program, spent the day Tuesday rejuvenating Vance Elementary School. Volunteers planted flowers and painted murals for students to enjoy when they get back to class on Thursday.

Other projects include developing an open-air gazebo for outdoor learning.

UA sophomore Kailie Powder said the program bolsters students’ pride in learning.

“Ultimately, the goal is to boost student pride,” she said. “We found that when students have pride in coming to school, they see the murals on the walls, they see flowers, they’re excited to come to school. It really boosts attendance and morale, which is the ultimate goal for us.”
