Two suspects were arrested and charged with capital murder Monday night after a body was found by hunters off South Sandy Road that morning.

Police arrested Michael David Belcher, 31, of Centreville, and Chylli Bruce, 18, of Brent on capital murder charges. Both are being held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on no bond. Investigators say they’ve identified other potential suspects and expect more charges as the investigation continues.

The victim was identified as Samantha Christine Payne, 29, from Maplesville. Police said Payne was killed Nov. 1 or Nov. 2.

Police said Payne’s cause of death and a motive will not be released at this time.

Investigators said Payne and Belcher knew each other, and were together a few days before her murder. Investigators said they believe Payne, Belcher, Bruce and others were together in Bibb County on Nov. 1.

Investigators said they believe Payne was assaulted in Bibb County that night, and then driven to the area where her remains were recovered by Belcher, Bruce and others on or around Nov. 2.

The Hale County Sheriff’s Office and Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s office came in contact with Belcher, Bruce and others on the morning of Nov. 2 on South Sandy Road after responding to a suspicious person/vehicle call.

Bruce and Stephen George, 27, of Brent, were arrested by Hale County Sheriff’s deputies on drug charges that day. George remains at the Hale County Jail.
