TUSCALOOSA POLICE TO DEPLOY “SHOPPER CHOPPER” TO COMBAT HOLIDAY CRIME
With the holiday shopping season heating up, The Tuscaloosa Police Department will once again be tackling crime from the sky.
The Police Department will be using multiple helicopters for the “Shopper Chopper Program.” Officers will fly over busy shopping center parking lots, looking for people who may be lurking in areas, and then alert officers on the ground to check out specific locations.
TPD said it’s had success in the past with this program, especially when it comes to preventing car burglaries.
“Well, we have searchlights, we have cameras that we are able to zoom in and check cars and make sure people aren’t having their cars broken into or make sure they have safe passage from the store to their car. just to keep an eye on everything,” TPD Lt. Chris James said.
The helicopters will be equipped with a new camera system feature, which allows them to give clothing description from 1,200 feet in the air.
