UPDATE: 1 dead, 1 facing murder charges in early-morning shooting

One man is dead and another is facing murder charges in his death after a shooting early this morning in Tuscaloosa.

It happened around 7:30 a.m. at the Chevron located at 3800 Joe Mallisham Parkway. The victim was taken to DCH Regional Medical Center for treatment, where he died.

Authorities said the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cornelius Rashad Jones, turned himself in at the Tuscaloosa County Jail soon after the shooting, which was witnessed by several people and captured on video.

The victim was identified as John Weston Horton, 50.

Witnesses said he was sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle parked in the gas station parking lot when the suspect approached and shot him through the passenger window.

Investigators said they determined Horton was in a relationship with a woman Jones was previously involved with, and that woman was driving the car in which the victim was a passenger. The woman was not injured in the shooting.

Jones was charged with capital murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle. He will be placed in the Tuscaloosa County Jail with no bond.


One person is in the hospital following a shooting this morning in Tuscaloosa, and police are piecing together what happened.

Around 7:30 a.m., Tuscaloosa Police dispatch got a call from a woman who said a passenger in her vehicle was shot while they were at the Chevron gas station on Joe Mallisham Parkway. Police said the woman was driving when she made the call and she told dispatchers the victim may have been dead.

TPD officers went to the gas station and a nearby home, where they’re investigating what happened. Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office deputies are speaking with a suspect in a separate location.

The victim was taken to DCH Regional Medical Center, but their condition is unknown.
