Tuscaloosa Police cracking down on Glock switches
The Tuscaloosa Police Department is cracking down on an illegal device that turns a semi-automatic weapon into an automatic weapon.
It’s called a Glock switch or auto sear, and this small device enables some pistols to fire multiple rounds with one trigger press. These devices are not legal in the U.S., but they’re commonly available online through manufacturers in China and other areas.
Tuscaloosa Police Chief Brent Blankley said knowing these devices are on our streets is extremely troubling.
“It is very scary from the public and from an officer safety standpoint,” Blankley said. “We started seeing a couple of them come in and were like, ‘you have gotta be kidding me.’ It changes the game. It is very easy to install, so it is troubling for the community and officer safety as well.”
Automatic weapons aren’t outright banned in the U.S., but owning them requires a special license and tax obligations.
Blankley said Glock switches are illegal and possessing one is a felony.
