Today kicked off Tuscaloosa Public Library’s summer reading program “On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!”

Library staffers said it’s not just books on offer this summer, and there will also be plenty of appearances from musicians, magicians, animals and more.

And summer reading isn’t just for kids, as there are plenty of programs for teens and adults, too.

Today, library visitors enjoyed a live musical performance thanks to Birmingham’s Iron Giant Percussion.

TPL Director of Youth and Community Services Pamela Williamson said the library’s offerings are a great way to keep kids reading and learning throughout summer.

“We know so much about kids falling behind during the summer, losing a little bit of that edge that they gained all year round,” she said. “And our summer reading program helps to maintain those sharp skills that they’re gonna need in the next coming year.”

If you missed it today, Iron Giant Percussion will be performing again Thursday at the main library (1801 Jack Warner Parkway) at 9:30 a.m., and again at the Brown Branch (300 Bobby Miller Parkway) at 2 p.m.
