Do you adore belting out gospel music? You’re a perfect match for Tuscaloosa’s Gospel Best competition, and auditions are coming up soon.

The Benjamin Barnes YMCA is hosting their third Tuscaloosa Gospel Best competition, featuring local singers competing for the honor of best gospel singer while helping out with a great cause.

Benjamin Barnes YMCA Executive Director Lakeda Smith said auditions are open to anyone 18 or older. The first round of auditions is 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, at the Benjamin Barnes YMCA. A second round of auditions for those who pass the first will be held Sunday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. in the same location.

The final 12 contestants will perform live at a later date in the hopes of becoming the 2022 Tuscaloosa’s Gospel Best winner.

“There were more than 18,000 views on our Benjamin Barnes YMCA Facebook page for each audition, so the recognition and the awareness are big for an up-and-coming singer,” Smith said.

During the finals, viewers can cast $1 votes for the contestant of their choice as often as they desire via the Benjamin Barnes YMCA’s Cash App or PalPal. And that money is going to a great cause, Smith said.

“All of the proceeds benefit youth sports, after-school programs and summer camp, so it is a worthwhile event for anyone who sings to be a part of,” Smith said. “Or you can vote for your favorite singer and all of those proceeds again go back into our youth program.”

2021’s Gospel Best winner Kristian Simmons said anyone who’s hesitant about auditioning shouldn’t be.

“Even though it’s a competition, I always think of it as you are competing against yourself verus competing against other people, if you are having any doubts second guess, any anxiety I would definitely say pray about that and go for it,” Simmons said. “You have to take a leap of faith. The opposite of fear is faith.”
