One Tuscaloosa firefighter has traveled half a world away so he can put his life-saving skills to the test.

Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue’s Beau Gunter is in Abu Dhabi competing in the United Arab Emirates’ World Firefighter Challenge, which is known as “the toughest two minutes in sports.”

Gunter’s fellow firefighters said it’s something they take seriously.

“We have teams in different departments, and any department can make their own team,” said Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue’s Colin Kemmerer. “We have a team of five to 10 here in Tuscaloosa. We compete against other departments around the Alabama area.”

The competition includes climbing a five-story tower, hoisting a 40-pound hose, hitting a hydraulic beam with a mallet and rescuing a 170-pound dummy.
