The Tuscaloosa County Commission and Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office are working together on beefing up the Tuscaloosa County Jail.

“The County Commission purchased a small portion of land across the street from the facility now which will give us the capability in the future to do some remodeling and some new construction on the side of the jail where it stands today,” said Tuscaloosa County Sheriff Ron Abernathy.

Abernathy said this long-term project idea is long overdue. The Tuscaloosa County Jail hasn’t had a major renovation since it was built in the 1980s, and it’s time for expanding its capabilities as well as its looks. Last week, the commission approved the nearly $100,000 purchase of land and a building situated next to the jail’s location.

“The piece of property purchased now would be to actually move our maintenance facility over there to that piece of property, and use that piece of land to take the place of some of the existing facility that we have,” Abernathy said.

Abernathy said the purchase and expansion will help support those who deal with mental health issues.

This process will be in full effect for the next five to 10 years.
