Tuscaloosa City Schools and other community organizations are lacing up their running shoes for a 5k fundraising run on Saturday, Feb. 29.

The race will begin at Tuscaloosa Magnet School, run through the University of Alabama campus and end up back at Tuscaloosa Magnet. This 3.1-mile run will benefit the Tuscaloosa City Schools library funding.

Library funding was cut back in 2008 by the state of Alabama and reinstated for the 2015-2016 academic year. However, that funding is not enough to expand library collections.

Tuscaloosa City Schools wants to improve their libraries and encourage students to read by collecting funding for more books.

“If we want to build strong readers, we need to provide them access to excellent libraries,” said Andrew Maxey, director of special programs for Tuscaloosa City Schools.

In-person registration for the 5k is available before the race starts. The cost is $30.
