While the city was looking ahead to budget items, the Tuscaloosa City School System held a strategic planning retreat on Friday. Members of the school board, staff and Superintendent Mike Daria spent most of the day in the conference room at the newly remodeled Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama building.

The themes discussed at the planning retreat included four specific areas: student success with equity and access, stakeholder engagement, safe and supportive learning environments, and organizational effectiveness and efficiency. Daria said successful programs don’t just happen, they take much thought and planning.

“So, we have our draft strategic plan being discussed at our retreat today,” Daria said. “So now we’re digging deep into the strategic plan to make sure we’re charting a course for the next three years to really move our system forward, to really become that premiere school system.”

Another focus of the discussions emphasized the importance of including all students in special programs within the school system.
