Tuscaloosa awards tentative bid to complete major road expansion project

Mcwrights Ferry Project

A long-awaited road project is one step closer to reality. The Tuscaloosa City Council approved a tentative bid for a contractor to extend McWrights Ferry Road over North River to Rice Mine Road. The bid for the road expansion project from GFC Construction, Inc./Dominion Construction Company, Inc came in at $53,127,242.50. In all, $68 million was reserved for the expansion.

District 3 Council Member Norman Crow said the expansion will include a new bridge, and that should alleviate traffic in the area.

“I think it is a needed transportation project that had been looked at for about 40 years,” Crow said. “One of the bigger issues to me is safety. It will help traffic flow improvements because there will be another exit from areas across the spillway at Lake Tuscaloosa. It’s an exciting day for the city of Tuscaloosa and District 3 especially. McWrights Ferry Road is a project that has been contemplated for 40 years and tonight we have taken a step with our friends at the County Road Improvement Commission to move that forward.”

The work is scheduled to begin in February and is expected to take about two and a half years to complete.
