A real Christmas tree can add holiday cheer to your home.  But your fabulous fir can quickly become a fire hazard.  According to Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue Training Chief, Mike Montgomery, Christmas trees can easily catch fire, especially when not properly handled.

“Fire prevention begins at the tree lot,”  Montgomery said.  “Choosing a healthy tree is a great start.”

Montgomery recommended following these basic safety tips:  1.)  Check tree for dryness by looking for fallen needles;  2.)  Water the tree frequently; 3.)  Keep the tree away from fireplaces and air vents.  4.)  Do not run extension cords under a rug, because foot traffic can damage wires, causing the cord to catch fire.
