TORNADO SPAWNS IN MISSISSIPPI, SLAMS INTO PICKENS COUNTY TUESDAY

PICKENS COUNTY – Officials with the National Weather Service described Tuesday afternoon’s tornado that hit Pickens County as “large and destructive.”

After it made its way across the state line from Mississippi into Alabama, it damaged homes and structures near Aliceville, including the federal prison there.

Belinda Tilley, the emergency 911 director in Aliceville, said the storm downed trees and power lines, and caused minor injuries.

The West Alabama Chapter of the American Red Cross opened a shelter at Aliceville City Hall Tuesday evening, helping residents whose homes were damaged.
