BRANDON, Miss. (AP) – A routine road closure for a transportation worker in Mississippi turned into the quick delivery of a baby on the interstate.

News outlets report Mississippi Department of Transportation worker Wayne Evans helped deliver the child Monday on I-20 near Brandon.

A car stopped with Desire’e Thomas in labor in the backseat.

Evans got his first aid kit, put on gloves and helped deliver the baby boy.

Thomas told WAPT-TV that Evans stayed calm and even got the umbilical cord from around her son’s neck.

Evans says he was able to stay calm thanks to his Marine Corps training.
