TUSCALOOSA – The University of Alabama is going high-tech with its fashion retailing and apparel design schools, and on Friday it showcased what’s in store.

Drummond Lyon Hall will have design labs, classrooms, offices and a library. In addition, there will be two exhibition rooms so students and guest speakers can showcase their work.

The building was tailored to look similar to Doster Hall, which is the current building housing the students in those concentrations.

There is also a huge archive of work, from books to physical artifacts at Doster Hall that will be moved to the new building.

Brian Taylor, a senior instructor in the Department of Clothing, Textiles and Interior Design, said this new building will offer students a huge opportunity.

“I’m just excited for us to have a major presence on campus and within our state,” Taylor said. This is definitely a game-changer for us. It will help us be more noticed and we can recruit more students because we will be able to provide this type of education to students in the state of Alabama.”

The College of Human Environmental Sciences expects the building to be completed in the summer of 2023, with the hope it will be ready for the Fall 2023 semester.
