The NBA is Back!

By WVUA 23 digital reporter Hunter De Siver

It feels like just yesterday when Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks brought their first NBA championship since the early 70s to the Deer District.

The emerging generational talent is ready to attempt to lead the defending champs to back-to-back titles. However, there are 29 teams that want to touch the Larry O’Brien Trophy just as much as the Greek Freak did this past July.

After months of waiting, an estimated 400 million worldwide NBA fans are ready for the basketball season to tip-off.

Last season was the first season since the emergence of COVID-19 where arenas were allowed to fill up to a certain capacity. Fans got a first-person look at amazing moments like Nikola Jokic winning MVP, Bam Adebayo’s block and Alabama alum Collin Sexton taking down the Nets.

The 2021-22 season begins tonight with the Brooklyn Nets vs the Milwaukee Bucks and the Golden State Warriors vs the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Nets, on paper, have one of the most talented rosters in the league. This past season they had future hall-of-famers Kevin Durant, James Harden and Kyrie Irving all on the roster. However, due to injuries by all three players, it was rare that they were all on the court at the same time.

Last season, the Nets lost to the Bucks in game seven of the eastern conference semi-finals. It was one of the best games of the entire season.

The Nets are looking to avenge that loss tonight. However, Kyrie Irving will not play this game due to not being vaccinated. This has been a big issue this entire offseason for him and the media.

In the next game, the Lakers hope to get back on track after losing in the first round last year. The Lakers are loaded with a talented roster of players like LeBron James, Anthony Davis and newly acquired future hall-of-famers Russell Westbrook and Carmelo Anthony. The Lakers, while also being very talented, also are the oldest team in the NBA.

Fans can argue that the Warriors were the best team of the 2010s. However, since they lost to the Raptors in the 2019 NBA Finals, they have gone in a downward spiral.

With injuries to the greatest shooting duo of all time, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, they finished with one of the worst records in the NBA in the 2020 season.

Last season, Curry was back, but Thompson tore his Achilles right before the season began. They just missed the playoffs after Curry had an MVP-caliber season. Klay Thompson won’t be playing for the Warriors tonight or for at least the next few weeks.

We are only a few hours away from the start of the NBA’s 75th season. The talent that the league has this year is unlike any other. This season is guaranteed to be one to remember.
