Thanksgiving travel: Still lower than 2019, but picking up major steam
The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is the biggest travel day of the week, and this year is no exception.
AAA of Alabama is predicting more than 53 million Americans are traveling 50 miles or more over the holiday weekend.
So expect heavy traffic on the roads or at airports, said AAA of Alabama Spokesperson Clay Ingram.
“We knew that most of the other holidays this year, we’re up considerably close to what we were seeing in 2019 before all this COVID stuff came along,” Ingram said. “There are still some people who aren’t comfortable getting out and being around other people and understandably so, so that’s why we’re not quite back up to pre-pandemic levels, but it’s a good start.”
In Alabama, the average price for a gallon of gas is hovering around $3.16, which is down from the seven-year high we hit a few weeks ago.
Ingram said he expects that amount to decrease even more as Christmas gets closer.
