TALLADEGA MAYOR RECOVERING FROM BEATING
VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. (AP) – The 74-year-old mayor of Talladega is hospitalized after he says he was beaten outside a barbershop by a man wielding a baseball bat.
Mayor Larry Barton tells Al.com that he pulled up to the Vestavia Hills barbershop in his car Saturday morning and a man in a hood and trench coat began pounding him with the bat.
In an interview from his UAB Hospital room, Barton said the assailant “told me he had to kill me.”
Vestavia Hills police Lt. Brian Gilham told The Associated Press on Sunday that a suspect was in custody and a felony charge is expected to be filed Monday.
Gilham said the victim and suspect know each other. He declined to name the suspect until charges are filed or comment on what led to the attack.
