Suspect Shoots Self in Wake of Domestic Violence Incident in McCalla
A domestic dispute in McCalla escalated into an officer-involved shooting Wednesday night that left one man in the hospital.
The man injured is the suspect in this case, but investigators are not releasing his name until he leaves the hospital and is officially charged.
The incident was originally called in around 8:40 p.m. Wednesday as a domestic disturbance involving a gun on Apple Valley Road in McCalla.
Investigators reported the suspect threatened his wife and son and fired shots before law enforcement officials arrived.
The suspect fired his weapon at responding officers from Woodstock Police Department and Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.
No officers were injured.
“Around 30 shots were fired by the suspect in the incident,” said Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Capt. Marty Sellers.
Officers did not return fire, Sellers said, and as more police arrived at the scene the suspect shot himself.
“Officers then took him into custody and requested medical,” Sellers said. “He was transported to a medical facility, where he is listed as critical.”
The suspect will be charged with two counts of attempted murder for shooting at the responding officers, in addition to the charges he faces for the domestic violence incident.
