SUSPECT ARRESTED FOR UA SEXUAL ASSAULTS
TUSCALOOSA – Investigators arrested 29-year-old Joseph Christopher Spota after developing him as a suspect in a pair of sexual assault cases, at least one of which involved at University of Alabama student.
Spota was charged with Rape I and Kidnapping I after turning himself in at the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office around 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Investigators with Tuscaloosa County Homicide Unit believe Spota lured a female University of Alabama student into his vehicle around 3:15 a.m. Saturday by posing as a member of a church youth organization that offers sober rides to those who need them. Investigators said Spota drove the victim to the 800 block of Magnolia Drive, stopped her from exiting the vehicle, and committed a forcible sexual act upon her. According to investigators, the victim managed to stop Spota and escape from his vehicle.
Investigators are now trying to locate a second victim who may have ridden with Spota in a white Toyota FJ Cruiser earlier that same night along University Boulevard just west of Queen City Boulevard.
