Tuscaloosa’s Mayor Walt Maddox is already facing competition in next year’s mayoral race, as Urban Progressive Party found Stepfon Lewis announced plans to run on Monday.

Lewis said he’s running in an attempt at making life better for Tuscaloosa’s black residents.

“There are some things we wanted to see done differently in the community,” he said. “Whether with the schools, whether it’s with the lack of economic development in underserved communities in Tuscaloosa, because I feel that the city wasn’t going in that direction.”

Candidate qualifications begin Jan. 10 and runs through Jan. 24.
