MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – A state representative from Shelby County has been chosen to serve as superintendent of the State Banking Department.

Gov. Robert Bentley said in a statement Friday that he has appointed Rep. Mike Hill of Columbiana to replace John D. Harrison, who retired Thursday.

Bentley says Hill, who was elected in 1986, has served on several banking committees and has helped with banking legislation for nearly 30 years. Bentley says Hill spent decades on the House of Representatives Banking and Insurance Committee, which is now called the Financial Services Committee.

The governor says Hill earned a bachelor of science from Auburn University and also studied banking at Louisiana State University, and commercial lending at the University of Oklahoma.

Hill will begin in his new role July 5.
