SOUTHVIEW ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL WHO’S BEEN THERE SINCE DAY ONE IS RETIRING
Jami Patrick has served as principal at Southview Elementary since the school’s founding in 2008, but now she says it’s time for her to focus on her other family members.
“She has built relationships with us and then she has been a mentor to teach us how to build a relationship with the kids,” Southview Pre-K teacher Amy Duncan told WVUA 23. Duncan has also been at Southview since day one.
During our visit with Patrick, students of all ages showed their love for her with waves, smiles, high fives, hugs and even the “mannequin challenge.”
“You have to build relationships with your children,” said Patrick, “so that they feel comfortable coming to you and saying, ‘Mrs. Patrick, I’m having a hard day today or Mrs. Patrick something happened I need to talk to you.’”
Patrick has this message to her successor
“I didn’t have to step into anybody else’s shoes and I don’t want anyone to feel like they’re stepping in mine because we are a family. It’s just going to be another family member.”
Jami Patrick has worked in the Tuscaloosa City Schools System for over two decades. She will retire at the end of the school year.
