A Tuscaloosa legend was honored Wednesday night at Sokol Park after serving as a softball umpire for more than 60 years.

Tuscaloosa Park and Recreation Authority renamed the park’s field A after James Gunter, who credits his fellow umpires with his list of honors and accomplishments.

“I was shocked but I was proud, but that brings in another word, you have to be humble,” Gunter said. “Because I didn’t do it by myself. All these people helped me and you’ve got to remember when an umpire goes on the field he’s never by himself, he’s got a partner out there.”
