An uncommon event occurred in Alabama Tuesday.

The U.S. Geological Service reported a 2.4 magnitude earthquake in Jackson County. A quake of that magnitude typically only comes with minor shaking and can only be felt by several people, compared to an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 or higher that is usually seen on the west coast and can cause major damage.

The northeastern part of Alabama has had earthquakes in the past.
