MARION COUNTY – The Byrd Volunteer Fire Department held a memorial service this morning to honor one of their own.

Donny Miller, 67, along with Linda Cole, 61, were victims of a double shooting last week in Hamilton. Jimmy Cooper allegedly shot the two victims at a local law office and accounting firm.

Fellow firefighter Norm Tilbert said he’ll always remember Miller.

“We at the fire department use this terminology..and I”ll say it this way: Bird F4 to the Lord. Lord, I’m 10-23, I’m 10-8,” Tilbert said. In firefighter terminology, “10-23” means, “arrived at the scene” and “10-8” means “ready for service.”

The Hamilton community as a whole is still coping with the shooting, that occurred exactly one week ago today. Hamilton Mayor Wade Williams has been active in the community following the incident.

“Well I think it’s actually brought us together more,” Williams said. “We had a memorial service prayer vigil on Monday night and we had about 300 people there and the people just seemed to be united, praying for each other, lifting each other up and you know I think as tragic as this has been it’s brought our community closer together.”
