SHELTON STATE NAMES SCHOLARSHIP FOR FORMER ALABAMA COACH GENE STALLINGS

Former University of Alabama football coach Gene Stallings is getting a Shelton State Community College scholarship named after him.

Stallings and his wife, Ruth Ann, were in Tuscaloosa this morning as Shelton State announced the Gene Stallings Endowed Leadership Scholarship.

Former Tide player Kareem McNeal and Dr. Milady Murphy were co-chairs for the event, and friends and several of Stallings’ former players paid tribute to the coach.

Stallings said he’s happy to help some people get to college who may not be able to attend otherwise.

“What a joy it was to be the recipient of this scholarship,” he said. “Knowing that somebody is going to go to college who couldn’t otherwise go because of the Gene Stallings scholarship. I’m indebted to Shelton.”

Stallings said the scholarship should go to a student of high integrity who has an excellent work ethic.
