SECOND MISTRIAL DECLARED FOR MADISON POLICE OFFICER

By Cokie Thompson, WVUA 23 Staff

The second trial of a police officer accused of excessive force against an Indian grandfather has ended in a mistrial.

That’s the same result jurors reached during the first trial of Madison Police Officer Eric Parker, which ended in September.

Parker was accused of violating the rights of 58-year-old Sureshbhai Patel during an encounter in February. Police dash cam video showed Parker slamming Patel to the ground.

Patel was in the neighborhood to visit his son and new grandson. Patel is from India and said he did not understand the officer’s orders.

Patel was temporarily paralyzed as a result of the encounter.

The FBI investigated the case, and the justice department found that Parker’s actions deprived the man of his constitutional rights.

Parker said the man aroused suspicion and pulled away from him.
