By WVUA 23 Student Reporter Meredith Barbrick

If you want to vote in Alabama, you’re required to have a photo ID. If you don’t, free voter ID card are available thanks to an online application or by visiting a mobile voter ID location.

Alabama Election Division’s Assistant Todd Ossanna said it’s important to require photo IDs because it helps prevent voter fraud.

“It’s important because people in this state need to show up at the polls and say, ‘Look, I belong in this state, I live in this state and I want to vote in this state,’ and that ID just verifies that for us.”

REPUBLICAN NOMINEE FOR DISTRICT ATTORNEY OF TUSCALOOSA COUNTY

Republican nominee for District Attorney Hays Webb said he hopes people know educating yourself before voting is important.

“It is not meaningful unless people take part, right?” he said. “And so I think that it is very important that people not only vote but it is also important that people educate themselves before they vote.”

After completing an application, residents will receive their free Alabama voter ID card in the mail after about two weeks.
