Remembering Chief Mike

The Mt. Olive Volunteer Fire Department is mourning the loss of one of its own, after losing their fire chief to cancer over the weekend. WVUA’s Chelsea Barton spent some time with those closest to John Michael Michalski. The past few days have been the fire department’s first ever without him.
He helped found the Mt. Olive Volunteer Fire Department in August of 1984. Michalski was diagnosed with cancer the beginning of this year. Before his death, he did get to see his department receive an ISO rating of four, one being the best and ten being the worst. Those at the Mt. Olive Volunteer Fire Department tell WVUA they are the first volunteer fire department in the state to receive such an good rating.
Michalski leaves behind two daughters, four grandchildren and an extended fire family.
Funeral services for Chief Mike will be held Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church at 11:00 AM with a visitation one hour before.
