PREGNANT WOMAN JAILED TO STOP HEROIN USE SEEKS BAIL

BESSEMER, Ala. (AP) – A pregnant Alabama woman who was jailed to keep her from using heroin is asking a judge to allow her release on bail.

A Jefferson County judge scheduled a hearing Thursday afternoon to consider the request by 21-year-old Alexandra Laird of Pleasant Grove.

Laird was indicted earlier this year after a daughter was born addicted to heroin. She’s now pregnant again, and was arrested earlier this month after authorities said she admitted using heroin regularly while pregnant.

Laird is asking to go into a treatment program where she could take medication to protect the fetus from opioid addiction.

Laird’s lawyer is asking a judge to approve bail, but prosecutors oppose the request. Authorities say she needs to remain in custody to keep her away from heroin.
