Carfentanyl — also known as elephant tranquilizer — is a potent opioid, about 10,000 times stronger than morphine. So illegal drug makers and users searching for an extreme high have begun lacing their heroin with the drug, making for an extremely lethal combination.

According to EMS World, the combination is so strong first responders have to use 10 times the usual amount of opioid overdose treatment Narcan to revive victims.

Tuscaloosa Police Lt. Teena Richardson said heroin cases in Tuscaloosa have declined in the past year, but that doesn’t mean the drug won’t find its way to the city’s streets.

Richardson said it takes time for a new drug to expand across the U.S., which gives the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force enough time for preparation and prevention.
