POLICE: WOUNDED FELON INITIATED GUNFIRE STRIKING OFFICER

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – Authorities in Alabama say a man hospitalized after exchanging gunfire with police has been charged with wounding an officer.

Kenneth Dewayne Whitehead was charged with two counts of attempted murder.

Whitehead was one of three suspects arrested by police Wednesday.

Police say West Precinct Sgt. Anthony Wheeler and another officer pulled over a truck suspected of towing a stolen vehicle.

Police say Whitehead and another suspect fled and gunfire was exchanged during the chase, leaving Whitehead and Wheeler injured.

Wheeler is a 10-year veteran of the department.

Whitehead is a convicted felon.

It’s unclear whether Whitehead has an attorney.
