Pinson Valley will move on to Saturday’s 6A Boys Championship with a final score of 54-51 against Hillcrest.

Pinson Valley faced off against Hillcrest at the 6A Boys Semifinals at Legacy Arena in the Birmingham–Jefferson Convention Complex on Feb. 27.

The Patriots were off to an early start with an 8-point lead. JaLon Johnson pulled out a layup and a foul; yet, the Indians came storming back. Johnson lost his handle on the ball, and Ga’quincy McKinstry ended up with it in transition and slammed it home. The Patriots lead was then cut to four as the Indians staked their claim on the scoreboard going into the break.

In the second half, Pinson Valley successfully added to its lead. Geordon Pollard blocked Johnson and pushed it up the court for McKinstry to score allowing the Indians to press its lead up to nine, but Hillcrest’s Johnson knocked down the lead to three.

Later, Johnson scored a mid-range jumper and cut the lead to two.

With under a minute to go, the Patriots were down three. The comeback would fall short for Hillcrest though, as they failed to score a game-tying 3-pointer at the sound of the buzzer.
