PIGGLY WIGGLY MANAGER: BE MINDFUL OF OTHERS WHEN YOU STOCK UP ON MEAT
Despite an overall dip in supply, don’t worry about stocking your freezers just yet because meat is still widely available in Tuscaloosa.
Across the country, meat plants stopped or slowed production because of the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in many national and local grocery chains limiting customer purchases.
Costco and Publix are among the major companies enforcing limits, usually requesting patrons purchase only one or two of an item at a time.
Piggly Wiggly, a regional grocery chain based in the Southeast, isn’t putting a limit on meat purchases.
But store employees are encouraging customers to be mindful of others.
Greensboro Avenue Piggly Wiggly Manager Jay Welborn said he believes setting limits would cause buyers to panic and buy more than they can use.
“If we start getting out there with a limit on the amount of product the customer can buy, then they’re going to be concerned about how much they need to buy and should they start stockpiling on their end, “ said Welborn.
Welborn said Piggly Wiggly and other stores can source and package their meat from alternate locations such as restaurant supply companies. Many restaurant suppliers have an overabundance of inventory because of restaurant closures and stay-at-home restrictions.
